Halloween Night Game Plan: Real Food Before the Candy Takes Over
Halloween lands on a Saturday this year. That sounds like great news until you realize what it actually means: a full day of costume repairs, a hunt for the missing wizard hat, a neighborhood parade or two, and a house full of kids running on pure sugar by 6 PM.
And somewhere in the middle of all that, someone is supposed to make dinner.
Let’s be honest. Nobody wants to be standing over the stove when the doorbell starts ringing and the first group of tiny superheroes shows up. And nobody wants their kids heading out for two hours of walking with nothing in their stomachs but the “just one” fun-size candy bar they snuck from the bowl.
We get it. Feeding people is what we do. So let’s talk about how to get real food on the table on Halloween night, without making it one more thing on your already-packed to-do list.
The Halloween Dinner Problem
Here’s the thing about Halloween: the window for dinner is tiny. Between getting costumes on, taking the photos Grandma asked for, and heading out before it gets dark, you’ve got maybe 45 minutes to feed everyone.
Your usual options look something like this:
- Cook a real meal (in the middle of costume chaos? Bold.)
- Frozen pizza again (fine, but nobody’s excited about it)
- Skip dinner and let the candy haul count as a meal (we’ve all seen how that ends)
- Grab fast food on the way and hope it’s still warm when you sit down (it won’t be)
None of these feels quite right. You want something that’s hearty enough to fuel a long night of walking, easy enough that nobody’s stuck in the kitchen, and good enough that the grown-ups get something to look forward to, too.
That’s where BBQ comes in.
Why BBQ Is the Perfect Halloween Dinner
It’s Ready When You Are
Our meats are smoked low and slow for hours before you ever walk through the door. That means when you pick up dinner, it’s done. No prep, no timing, no pots to scrub at 10 PM. Grab it on your way home, set it on the counter, and let everyone dig in between costume adjustments.
It Fuels a Long Night
Trick-or-treating is a workout. Kids cover a lot of ground chasing the house that gives out full-size bars. A plate of pulled pork, mac and cheese, and cornbread keeps them going a lot longer than a granola bar does. And here’s a bonus: kids who eat a real dinner first are a little less likely to inhale their entire candy bag before bedtime. (A little.)
It Works for Every Age
The littlest witches can grab a grilled cheese, mini pizza, or jumbo hot dog from our kids menu. Teenagers who eat like they’re training for something can tackle a Chad’s Sampler. And the adults? You’ve earned some smoked wings. Everyone gets what they want, and nobody has to cook three different meals.
It Fits the Season
There’s a reason we keep saying BBQ hits different in the fall. Warm, smoky, hearty food on a crisp October night is about as cozy as it gets. It’s comfort food made for exactly this time of year.
What to Order for Halloween Night
Not sure where to start? Here’s our Halloween game plan.
For the whole family: Our Family Meals are built for nights like this. One pickup, everyone fed. Add a quart of pulled pork or chopped brisket if you’ve got extra trick-or-treaters tagging along.
For the kids: Mac and cheese is non-negotiable. Pair it with fries and crazy sauce or a kids menu favorite, and you’ve got a happy goblin.
For the grown-ups: This is your moment. Hogan’s Wings with our award-winning wing sauce, Honey-Jalapeño Wings if you like a little heat, or Angie’s Wings with spicy salsa verde. A chopped brisket sandwich with Texas BBQ sauce never disappoints, either.
Sides that matter: Collard greens, pork and beans, and house-made cornbread round out the table. (We have strong opinions on this, by the way. Here’s how we rank BBQ sides.)
A dessert that isn’t candy: Believe it or not, there’s life beyond the candy bowl. Our banana pudding and brownies are a treat the whole family can share, and nobody has to trade for them.
Throwing a Halloween Party? Let Us Handle the Food
Maybe you’re the house on the block. You’ve got the fog machine, the spooky playlist, and a guest list that keeps growing. Whether it’s a costume party for adults, a neighborhood trunk-or-treat, or a classroom celebration, the food shouldn’t be the scary part.
That’s what our catering is for. We cater groups of 25 or more, with packages starting at $12.50 per person. Pick your meats (pulled pork, kielbasa, chicken, or ribs), choose your sides, and we’ll make sure there’s enough for everyone. Add a full pan of banana pudding or brownies and dessert is done, too.
A few tips for a stress-free Halloween party:
Go buffet style. Guests show up at different times on Halloween, especially if they’re coming after trick-or-treating. BBQ holds up well on a buffet, so the last guest gets food just as good as the first.
Have a little fun with names. “Graveyard Greens,” “Monster Mac,” “Pulled Pork from the Crypt.” Grab some cardstock and a marker. It costs nothing and people love it.
Plan for about a half pound of meat per person. Not sure how much to order? Just give us a call. Tell us how many guests you’re expecting and we’ll help you figure out the rest. (Want the details first? Here’s how our catering packages work.)
Don’t forget the grown-up drinks. Pair your spread with something local from our beer menu. We’ve talked before about how well BBQ and fall gatherings go together, and Halloween is no exception.
Make It a Halloween Weekend at Chad’s
Since Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, why not make a whole day of it? Swing by for lunch before the costume chaos begins, or grab a seat on our covered patio with a cold beer while the kids show off their costumes.
And yes, our patio is dog-friendly, so bring your four-legged hot dog, pumpkin, or tiny dinosaur. We’re not saying costumed pups get extra attention from our staff, but we’re not saying they don’t.
Treat Yourself This Halloween
Halloween is supposed to be fun. The costumes, the candy, the neighbors you only see once a year, the kids who are way too excited. It’s not supposed to be about you scrambling to get dinner on the table between face paint and flashlights.
So skip the stress. Let us do the cooking, and you focus on the trick-or-treating.
Ready for a Halloween that’s all treat and no trick? Order takeout from Chad’s on your way home, book our catering for your Halloween party, or come hang out on our dog-friendly patio and see who shows up in the best costume. Happy Halloween from all of us at Chad’s!
Featured image idea: BBQ spread (pulled pork, mac and cheese, wings) on a table with pumpkins, fall leaves, or a jack-o’-lantern.
Confirm with Chad’s before posting: Halloween Saturday hours (regular Saturday hours are 11 AM to 9 PM), any Halloween specials or a costume discount worth adding, and current catering pricing (the site says prices may change).
